Barley is a major European crop important for industrial fodder
as well as for malt production (beer, regional whiskey, bioethanol production).
Of a total cereal production of 269.0 Mt, barley accounts for 22% in 27 EU
member states (FAO, 2006). Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy and UK produce
together 23.7 Mt of barley. Barley belongs to the
Triticeae subfamily of the Poaceae, which represents all
important small grain cereal species including wheat and rye.
Its diploid genome structure, the strongly inbreeding-based mating system,
and a long tradition in breeding, plant physiology etc. have made barley
the model crop species for the Triticeae.
Besides considerable national efforts in developing barley as a model crop
for the Triticeae there is a clear requirement for transnational
co-operations and research funding leading to integrated barley research of the
European Research Area (ERA). To this aim, BarleyGenomeNet was founded
in 2003 by four research institutions and has grown in the meantime to nine
partner institutions with a major interest in barley.
The main objectives of BarleyGenomeNet are:
- Free exchange of information
- Joint use of resources and research facilities
- Training of young scientists
- Joint public relations work
These main objectives will be met by informal co-operations on
short-term basis, by coordinated applications for national funding
through the ERA-PG program as well as by joint applications for funding
within Framework 7 Research Programme of the European Union.
